Shaker Baghouses
The term Shaker Style Baghouse is used to describe a type of fabric filter that is literally cleaned by shaking or agitating the filter media. Dust-laden air enters the lower hopper portion of the unit and is collected on the inside of suspended filter media. The clean air exits through the filter bag to the clean air chamber and is then discharged in to the atmosphere.
The filter media continues to collect dust and at some point will build up a resistance to air flow that becomes unacceptable because of the increased dust cake. At this point, the incoming air must be stopped in order to begin a shaking (cleaning) cycle. Depending on the size and complexity of the system, this may entail shutting down the whole system or the isolation of individual compartments or sections. Once the media has been cleaned it is returned to service by either starting up the equipment, or in the case of a multi-compartment system returning the last isolated compartment to service and isolating another one for cleaning.
